Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White suffers bad news on England duty

Morgan Gibbs-White’s England journey under Thomas Tuchel hasn’t been smooth, with the latest twist complicating the matter even further.

The 25-year-old suffered initial disappointment as Gibbs-White was left out of Tuchel’s England squad, much to the dismay of Forest fans who rightly believed he’d done enough to earn a place.

Their frustration was shown against Ipswich as Forest fans aimed a dig at Tuchel with a Gibbs-White chant, but there was a happy ending as the Reds midfielder was called up to the Three Lions squad as a late replacement for Cole Palmer.

Anthony Elanga reacted to Gibbs-White’s England call-up by simply replying ‘only right!’ to the Instagram post which echoed the feelings of most England fans even away from the City Ground.

However, the latest update ahead of Tuchel’s opening England game against Albania has added yet further drama to Gibbs-White’s time with the national team.

Morgan Gibbs-White left out of England’s squad to face Albania

Paul Merson felt sympathy for Gibbs-White before his initial snub was reversed but in all honesty, it may have been less humiliating for the Forest talisman to have stayed at home rather than what has now happened.

According to BBC Sport, Tuchel has left Gibbs-White out of his matchday squad to face Albania on Friday evening at Wembley.

The report said: “Nottingham Forest midfielder Gibbs-White was not included by Tuchel’s original squad but was called up when Chelsea’s Cole Palmer pulled out.

“Uefa rules state that a manager can only select 23 players in his squad for a fixture. Tuchel selected 26 players for the games versus Albania and Latvia, meaning he had to cut three for each game.

“Gibbs-White, Liverpool defender Quansah and Southampton goalkeeper Ramsdale are the three to have missed out for Tuchel’s first match in charge.”

With the match carrying extra importance with it being Tuchel’s first as England boss, Gibbs-White missing out is a worrying sign as to where the German coach sees him in the pecking order, especially considering what Tuchel has said about Jordan Henderson in the buildup to the Albania game.

Thomas Tuchel sees Jordan Henderson as more important than Morgan Gibbs-White

It’s fair to say that when the England squad was initially announced, Gibbs-White’s omission was made even more frustrating by the inclusion of Henderson.

A crucial cog in the Forest squad that sits on the cusp of Champions League qualification being overlooked for a 35-year-old Henderson seemed bizarre regardless of the ex-Liverpool man’s talents, but Tuchel was quick to defend his decision.

Speaking to ITV, he said: “He [Henderson] embodies everything. He is a serial winner, his personality and character. He is the glue in every team that he has played, the glue that makes things special.

“I am convinced. If a teacher in a school is convinced about the quality of the class, the character of the class, it is better than the other way around.”

Some would describe Gibbs-White as the glue that keeps Nuno Espirito Santo’s Forest together, so it begs the question of why Tuchel doesn’t believe he can offer the very same quality that Henderson does.

England do face Latvia after the Albania game so Gibbs-White will have another chance of making Tuchel’s matchday squad, but the signs look disappointingly worrying.
