It was a proud moment for the Nottingham Forest academy on Wednesday night as Brennan Johnson scored the goal that secured the Europa League for Tottenham.
When Forest sold Johnson to Tottenham, challenging for trophies would’ve been one of the key reasons he chose to move, but it hadn’t looked likely this season.
Johnson struggled against Forest on his return to the City Ground in December, and the two sides are set to finish at opposite ends of the Premier League table, with Spurs in a dismal 17th place.
However, that league finish is irrelevant now as Johnson’s Europa League final goal ended Spurs’ 17-year trophy drought, leading to Forest fans showing their pride for one of their own on social media.

Nottingham Forest fans show their delight for Brennan Johnson
Surprisingly, Johnson had been linked with a return to Forest to potentially help with UEFA homegrown rules ahead of next season’s European tour. With that goal, though, his place in Spurs history surely means they keep him.
Regardless, Forest fans were still keen to show their pride for the homegrown winger, taking to social media to react to his crowning moment.
One fan said: “I am absolutely delighted that Brennan Johnson scored the winner!” Another fan added: “Nottingham born and bred. Scores in European finals. Brennan Johnson, ladies and gentlemen.”
One said: “We’re so proud of YOU, Brennan! Made in Nottingham.” Another added: “Hopefully, Brennan finally gets the respect he deserves from the Spurs fans!”
A Forest fan added: “Nottingham Forest academy graduate scores the winning goal in a European final. Well in Brennan,” while another said: “Thrilled for Brennan, what a moment for him.”
The Forest academy graduate has achieved something incredibly special, but even before Wednesday’s goal, Johnson was enjoying a season that perhaps hasn’t earned the respect it deserves.
Brennan Johnson deserves more respect from Tottenham fans
Spurs fans haven’t always been impressed by Johnson since his move to North London, which is a completely valid feeling, but the Welshman has contributed enough this campaign to warrant slightly more respect.
| Statistic | Brennan Johnson this season |
| Appearances | 50 |
| Goals | 18 |
| Assists | 4 |
Johnson is Spurs’ top scorer this season with 18 in all competitions and has also shown tremendous longevity, making 50 appearances for a side that has struggled with injuries this season.
He’s had a knack for important goals, too, notching in the Europa League semi-final against Bodo/Glimt before the winning goal in the final topped it all off.
For a player who has suffered from plenty of abuse from Spurs fans since leaving the City Ground, Johnson has delivered in the big moments, hopefully earning him more credit.
