Tottenham told what it will take to ‘settle off the claim’ from Nottingham Forest for Morgan Gibbs-White

Nottingham Forest and Tottenham are locking horns over the transfer of Morgan Gibbs-White, but one football finance expert believes there is a clear solution.

Talks between Gibbs-White and Spurs were halted after Forest alleged that the North London club had made an illegal approach for the midfielder, in regards to their knowledge of Gibbs-White’s £60m release clause.

The presence of this release clause in Gibbs-White’s contract came as a surprise to Forest fans and the wider football world in general, leading to Evangelos Marinakis’ question of how exactly Spurs knew about the fee.

With the deal on hold, Gibbs-White is back at the Forest training ground with his teammates, which won’t last long if Spurs follow the advice of football finance guru Stefan Borson.

What Tottenham could do to secure Morgan Gibbs-White

In the midst of this saga, Forest have been linked with Jacob Ramsey as Gibbs-White’s potential replacement, with planning already in place to react if Spurs are able to secure their target.

In fact, sources have told Nottingham Forest News that Spurs and Forest expect the Gibbs-White deal to go through even with Marinakis’ potential complaint to the Premier League.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Borson explained the impact that this complaint could have on the deal, and how Spurs could react to it to ensure the deal goes through.

He said: “Once a formal complaint is made to the Premier League, it’s either in the form of an arbitration request, i.e. Nottingham Forest will sue within the Premier League rules. Or, alternatively, they are inviting the Premier League to investigate Spurs.

“If they were investigated, it would be alleged that they were trying to induce a breach of contract and a breach of confidentiality and that appears to be relatively serious.

“[…] I think they’ll have to pay more than the release fee to effectively settle the claim from Marinakis. I think the reality is that Nottingham Forest are basically saying you can’t have him for the release fee so we’re back in a negotiation.

“If it’s a release fee deal, then they’re saying you’ve induced him to breach so we’re entitled to the difference between what he’s worth and what you’ve induced him to be sold at.”

If Marinakis is able to negotiate a higher fee for Gibbs-White, then this would, of course, be good news, but with targets already lined up to replace him, the sooner the issue is resolved, the better.

A decision on Morgan Gibbs-White needs to be made quickly

At this stage, it’s hard to imagine seeing Gibbs-White line up for Forest on the opening day against Brentford.

Gibbs-White has shown no interest in signing a new contract that would remove the release clause, so Spurs getting their man seems by far the most likely outcome.

Alongside Ramsey, Forest have been linked with James McAtee of Manchester City and Harvey Elliott of Liverpool, all players who could thrive either in Gibbs-White’s position or out wide, still providing the same influence that the 25-year-old does.

Therefore, there’s no reason to waste time extending the Gibbs-White saga longer than it needs to go, where the risk of losing out on these capable targets becomes greater as other clubs look to pounce on Forest’s complacency.
