Nottingham Forest faced off against AS Monaco in a pre-season friendly on Saturday, in which Morgan Gibbs-White started amid the ongoing rumours of his move to Tottenham.

Gibbs-White was named in the starting XI against Monaco just over a week on from the chaos of Tottenham’s bid for the midfielder, which looked certain to be finalised.

Nottingham Forest News revealed that both sides still expect the Gibbs-White deal to go through, but nothing has advanced since Forest’s dispute over Spurs’ approach.

Gibbs-White has been training at Forest as normal, but Reds fans who watched his display against the Ligue 1 side were far from impressed with what he showed.

Morgan Gibbs-White struggles against AS Monaco

By all accounts, Gibbs-White has shown good attitude in training sessions, but judging by the reaction of Forest fans on social media, his display against Monaco left a lot to be desired.

One fan said: “His heart isn’t in it obviously,” while another said: “He is downing tools.”

Another Forest fan said: “It’s ok, Spurs, you can have him now,” with another adding: “Thank god he’s going.”

One added: ‘He doesn’t want to be there,” while one more fan said: “The less said about MGW’s performance, the better.”

Like the rest of the starting XI, Gibbs-White was taken off at half-time to a warm reception from the Forest fans, who will now wait to see whether they see him in the Garibaldi red ever again.

Morgan Gibbs-White is set for a crucial week in his Forest career

The Forest squad expected Gibbs-White to leave this summer but he remains at the City Ground for now in what looks set to be a telling week in his career.

With Forest set to depart for their pre-season camp in Portugal on Monday, Gibbs-White will want to know where the club stand on doing a deal with Tottenham, as his pre-season will be full of distractions otherwise.

It’s not as if Edu hasn’t been looking at potential replacements either, with Forest showing interest in Bilal El Khannouss of Leicester City among other creative midfielders.

Regardless of him featuring against Monaco, then, Forest and Gibbs-White need to come to an agreement about his future so that focus can return to on-field matters.
