It’s always nice to check up on former players and Nottingham Forest fans will be loving the reaction to one summer exit’s standout debut in the EFL.

Forest have been busy trimming down Nuno Espírito Santo’s squad to remove players who aren’t up to the quality required to compete in European football.

Most notably from the first team, Ramon Sosa was sold to Palmeiras after only a year at the City Ground, while Botafogo swooped to sign Danilo in a deal that was more disappointing for the Reds fans given his previous importance.

A number of fringe players have also filtered into the EFL, too, with one immediately making waves in his debut for Wrexham.

Lewis O’Brien shines on Wrexham debut despite defeat

Finally securing a permanent move away from Forest after a series of loans, Lewis O’Brien signed for Wrexham, having failed to make a single competitive appearance for the club under Espírito Santo.

The move suited all parties, then, and judging by the reaction to his debut performance on social media, O’Brien could be set for a starring role at the Hollywood-backed club.

A Cardiff fan said: “I knew he was an ex-Swans loanee but Lewis O’Brien is such a quality player,” while a Wrexham fan added: “Lewis O’Brien, what a player.”

One Swansea fan added: “Should’ve broke the bank for O’Brien man,” with another Wrexham fan saying: “O’Brien has been fantastic!”

Forest fans also praised his efforts, with one saying: “Lewis O’Brien playing well does bring me a bit of joy.”

Lewis O’Brien showed why Nottingham Forest bought him

O’Brien enjoyed a loan spell at Swansea City in the second half of the 24/25 season in a league that he has previously starred in, showing why Forest moved for him after promotion into the Premier League.

The 26-year-old was one of Huddersfield’s top performers when the Reds beat them in the play-off final, leading to O’Brien making a move to Trentside in the 22/23 summer window.

Speaking after the signing, then Reds boss Steve Cooper told Forest’s website: “We are delighted to secure the signing of Lewis O’Brien and we are thrilled to get this one over the line. He was one of the standout players in the Championship last season and possesses many of the qualities that we are looking for to strengthen the midfield unit.”

For O’Brien’s sake, he’ll be desperate to continue his opening day performance into the rest of the season to reach the levels that saw him earn a Premier League move.
