Nottingham Forest have made a real statement of intent as they brought in 13 new players in preparation for competing in four competitions.

Brazilian Cuiabano will be spending the first half of the season on loan at Botafogo, but the rest of the signings are set to be part of Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad.

Douglas Luiz’s signing impressed Micah Richards and Gary Lineker, but another transfer from Juventus has surprised legendary right-back Maicon.

The Champions League winning defender has spoken about Nicolo Savona recently, and couldn’t believe he was allowed to leave the Old Lady.

Maicon is a big fan of Nicolo Savona, and was shocked Juventus sold him

Maicon is an iconic player, and the right-back certainly knows what it takes to be a world-class fullback.

The former Inter Milan man has been keeping a close eye on Italian football, and was impressed by Nicolo Savona last season.

The Brazilian had high praise for the Italian, and admitted his shock that Juventus would let such a player go.

Speaking to Tuttosport via Alfredo Pedulla, Maicon said, ‘I really liked Savona last season. I thought he could become a key player for Juve: his sale really surprised me.’

Nottingham Forest fans will be delighted at the appraisal from such a player of Maicon’s ilk, and while the 44-year-old is surprised at the transfer, Forest were able to take advantage of the fact Juventus had to sell.

However, while Savona has impressed in the Serie A, he does have a tough task of becoming Forest’s starting right-back, but he could be helped by AFCON.

Nicolo Savona must take his opportunity during AFCON

Ola Aina has earned his right to be Nottingham Forest’s starting right-back, but Nicolo Savona will have a chance to usurp him.

Aina will most likely be away for AFCON from the end of December through January. This will give the Italian the perfect opportunity to make his mark.

There is no doubt that Savona has the talent, as endorsed by a player of Maicon’s quality, and there will be no shortage of chances to show it during that period.

Taking over the mantle of Aina on a more permanent basis will be tough, but it is a battle that Nuno will encourage, and welcome.
