Star who rejected Nottingham Forest three times in 2024 now suffers another significant blow

After Nottingham Forest had narrowly avoided relegation during the 2023/24 campaign, the club tried to land a number of top signings.

The recruitment gauge was increased, and instead of going for bargain additions, Forest wanted to spend some serious money on stellar recruits.

Nuno Espirito Santo eyed Eddie Nketiah for a Forest move, but he chose to join Crystal Palace after expressing a desire to remain in London.

Another striker was deliberating over a move to Forest on more than one occasion, before eventually rejecting the club when it had seemed likely he would sign on no fewer than three occasions.

Santiago Gimenez suffers another setback

Gimenez fancied a move to Forest but backed out on three occasions in the summer of 2024, leaving the club’s supporters feeling pretty miffed with the Mexican.

Gimenez chose to spend the first half of 2024/25 with Feyenoord before choosing to make a £30 million move to AC Milan in the January transfer window.

His first year is drawing to a close with the Italian giants and frankly, it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster ride for the player over the last 12 months.

Gimenez has been linked with Sunderland ahead of the January transfer window, but now, according to Milan News, the striker is facing two months out after requiring ankle surgery.

The 24-year-old has scored seven goals and claimed five assists in 20 appearances for Milan since checking in, but this season he’s not scored in any of the nine Serie A games he’s played in.

Gimenez would have been superb Forest signing

It was perhaps a sliding doors moment for Chris Wood that Gimenez didn’t end up signing for Forest, given that he scored 20 goals last season.

Had the Mexican striker agreed to a move to the City Ground, Wood would have likely spent most of the season on the bench, and the best season of his career might never have happened.

Gimenez is hardly going to get any sympathy from the Forest fan base after rejecting the club, clearly feeling that the team wasn’t capable of reaching Europe as they did last season.

Now, he will be forced to stay at Milan for the remainder of the season and given that he was out of favour with the manager before his injury, his prospects for the campaign look bleak.
