Nottingham Forest are going to be going in search of some new players during the January transfer window.

Sean Dyche will undoubtedly want to put his own stamp on the squad, whilst other players could leave the City Ground.

James McAtee has been linked with a move to Besiktas, and ultimately, fringe players might seek a way out next month.

It does feel as though the most pressing concern for Forest will be to address some gaps in the squad, however, with new players the order of the day.

Quality over quantity will likely be the order of the day, with two or three pieces of genuine quality likely to be in the sights of Dyche.

Nottingham Forest eye move for Brennan Johnson

It was claimed a week or so ago that Crystal Palace and Bournemouth were two of the clubs trying to sign Johnson from Tottenham in January.

The former Forest academy graduate has fallen down the pecking order under Thomas Frank, and he’s keen to play more frequently ahead of a possible trip to the World Cup in the summer.

According to reports, Forest are now in the mix to sign Johnson and bring him back to the club where he made a name for himself over a number of years.

Would you welcome Brennan Johnson back at Forest?

Johnson was sold for £47.5 million back in 2023, and last year he scored the winner as Tottenham were crowned Europa League champions.

It’s believed that Forest could actually get Johnson back for around half what they originally sold him for, with Spurs now willing to cut their losses next month.

Remarkably, Johnson finished last season with 22 goals for Tottenham and his fall down the pecking order under Frank has been pretty surprising to say the least.

Intriguingly, Johnson was really liked by Ange Postecoglou when he was in charge at Tottenham and he might have wished he’d had Johnson during his time at Forest.

Forest have to make sure Johnson deal is right for all parties

With Forest now in European competition, coming back to the City Ground could prove an attractive proposition for Johnson in the coming weeks.

However, it needs to be right for Dyche, the Forest squad and the way in which the team wants to play, and not merely done for romantic reasons that Johnson is from Nottingham.

It’s fair to say that Johnson is a very capable player at the Premier League level, and one aspect of signing him which is ideal is that he can play anywhere across the front three.

Since Anthony Elanga departed in the summer, Forest have perhaps missed that injection of pace when chasing a game, and Johnson would provide that.

Palace can offer the concept of remaining in London next month, but with Forest now in the mix to sign him, it will be fascinating to see where he ends up next month.
