Nottingham Forest might be struggling on the pitch this season, but the club has big plans away from the pitch.

Evangelos Marinakis has made no secret of the fact that he wants to make sure the football club comes into the 21st century with the infrastructure in place to match the club’s Premier League status.

It’s been a long, drawn-out process, but after years of toing and froing with a number of different organisations, things finally look to be on the up for the Reds when it comes to the City Ground.

Forest’s ground has had some wonderful makeshift redevelopments since winning promotion to the Premier League, but now things really look to be heating up.

Nottingham Forest announce City Ground update

Much to the delight of the fan base, Forest owner Marinakis has agreed to keep the club playing their home games on the banks of the River Trent.

Now, it would appear there has been a breakthrough in the redevelopment plans with the club announcing some positive news away from the pitch.

The statement reads: Nottingham Forest is delighted to confirm the submission of planning applications for the redevelopment of the City Ground.

Our home for over 120 years will see a significant investment made by our owner, Evangelos Marinakis, to deliver a sustainable and iconic design which increases the stadium’s capacity to over 50,000. The redevelopment will be an integral part of the economic growth of the city and the wider region.

The Club is grateful for the positive public engagement and overwhelming support shown for our proposals ahead of the planning submission. We would also like to thank to our key partners, Gleeds, KSS Design Group, Buro Happold, and Savills for their support to date.

We look forward to working with the Mayor of the East Midlands, Rushcliffe Borough Council, Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council, as well as our supporters and the wider community, to achieve a successful outcome in the near future.

Forest had considered taking the club away from the City Ground and into a purpose-built facility, but after canvassing fan opinion, Marinakis has clearly backtracked on that proposal.

Forest make small error during announcement of redevelopment

Right now Forest are a club in the midst of a relegation battle and it feels risky for the Reds to release plans of what the new stadium will look like with Premier League logos adorned on the stands.

A win against West Ham would definitely have Forest firmly in the mix to remain in the Premier League this season and would put the Reds seven points clear of the Hammers, who occupy 18th place in the league table.

Still, it’s only a minor detail, but it does see Forest put themselves in a possibly unfortunate position should the worst-case scenario happen and the team are relegated.

The new proposals do look absolutely brilliant and hopefully, Forest can see this season out and remain a Premier League club beyond the end of the current season.
