Nottingham Forest have a host of players out on loan at the moment, with the club’s academy brimming with talent.

Forest might be a bit of a basket case at the senior level with Sean Dyche fighting against relegation, but as far as the youngsters are concerned, the future looks bright.

A number of players will be hoping to get minutes in 2026 based on their academy performances, and the ones out on loan are busy making an impact, too.

One of the standout players away from the club on loan is now attracting Championship interest, and it would appear as though the club have a decision to make this month over his future.

Nottingham Forest receive bid for Jamie McDonnell

On Sunday, McDonnell starred as Nigel Clough’s Mansfield Town stunned Sheffield United 4-3 in the third round of the FA Cup.

The youngster has helped the Stags have a really fruitful Christmas period, ending any real danger of relegation this season from League One.

McDonnell spent last season playing in League Two with Colchester, and it’s fair to say that he’s really been unfazed by making the next step up.

Now, according to Alan Nixon on his Patreon, Oxford United have made a £1 million bid to buy McDonnell this month.

Matt Bloomfield is hoping to keep Oxford in the Championship and has made a bid to Forest, who must now decide whether or not to terminate his loan with Mansfield or not.

Forest should keep McDonnell at Mansfield

Recouping £1 million for a player in the grand scheme of things is not really a lot for Forest and there is an easier option here.

Clough’s association with Forest in the past should tempt the club to avoid annoying him and disrupting his squad at the midway point of the campaign.

McDonnell is settled at Mansfield and furthermore, he’s playing every single match under the Forest legend, and that should count for something.

The Forest gem is out of contract in the summer when he could walk away from the City Ground for free.

However, if the Reds genuinely believe there is a bit more money to be made on him it’d be easy enough to hand him an extension at the end of the season and go from there.
