Nottingham Forest want ‘quality’ striker if they can’t sign Jean-Philippe Mateta

Nottingham Forest are keen to sign another striker following the addition of Lorenzo Lucca.

Lucca checked in from Napoli last week as Sean Dyche bids to bolster his front line ahead of the closing stages of the 2025/26 campaign.

Forest are also keen on Jean-Philippe Mateta from Crystal Palace before the window shuts, although that might prove to be a tricky deal to complete.

A shortlist of strikers is likely to be identified by Forest, and now one journalist believes that a Premier League player could be on the radar should Mateta prove to be unobtainable.

Nottingham Forest eye Evan Ferguson

The Republic of Ireland striker has spent the first half of the season on loan with Roma, but regular football has proved hard to come by.

In 16 outings, he’s bagged three goals and claimed two assists, but starting matches has proved difficult for the striker, and as a result, Brighton might look to recall him.

TalkSPORT transfer expert, Alex Crook, said on the Transfer Insiders podcast: “On the subject of Roma, by the way, Evan Ferguson, obviously on loan there, he’s another player that’s been mentioned to me as being on Nottingham Forest’s list if they couldn’t get Mateta.

“And that would make a lot of sense, wouldn’t it? A player who is proven in the Premier League, albeit he didn’t score a lot of goals towards the end of his time at Brighton.”

Ferguson would be a downgrade from Mateta

Not signing Mateta and ending up with Ferguson would be very underwhelming from a Forest perspective, with the Frenchman proven in the top flight.

Mateta has been in rich goalscoring form over the last two-and-a-half seasons in the Premier League, and he certainly does know where the net is in England.

He may cost more money to sign than Ferguson would, but there are still some reservations over the 21-year-old’s ability to play regularly in the Premier League.

You can only pick one, who are you taking? Evan Ferguson or Jean-Philippe Mateta?

Forest perhaps don’t absolutely need another striker with Lucca joining Igor Jesus and Taiwo Awoniyi in the striking ranks, but if a proven player like Mateta could come in it would be great.

Ferguson has been called ‘quality’ in the past, but signing him this month would feel a bit like the ultimate panic signing from a fan perspective.
