Nottingham Forest watched on with a jealous fire in their belly last night as Aston Villa became the toast of Europe and lifted the Europa League aloft.

Villa beat Freiburg 3-0 weeks after demolishing Forest 4-1 on aggregate in the semi-finals to win their first major trophy for 30 years.

It was a tough watch from a Forest perspective. Although the team were beaten by the eventual winners, the drab nature of Freiburg’s performance gave a sense of what might have been for Forest.

Going into the game, Igor Jesus will have been feeling the heat and whilst some Forest players still feel a little bit sore over not making the final, the Brazilian does have something to celebrate.

Igor Jesus claims Europa League Golden Boot

In his first season in England, this is quite the season for Jesus, although his form in the Premier League has proved a little bit patchy.

Jesus has claimed the Golden Boot after scoring seven goals, with Villa duo John McGinn and Ollie Watkins unable to catch him after starting the final on five goals in the competition.

Freiburg star Vincenzo Grifo was also on five going into the final, but in truth, he never really threatened to get the couple of goals he needed to draw level with Jesus.

Jesus wins the title along with Ludogorets star Petar Stanic, who also bagged seven times, largely in the group stages of the competition.

At 25, the striker has proved that he’s got what it takes to play in England, and he should come back even stronger next summer when pre-season begins.

Jesus has been omitted from the World Cup squad, and as a result, he will get the chance to rest and be in the best shape possible, ready for next season.

The man signed from Botafogo should take a lot of heart from his performances in the Europa League and under Vitor Pereira in the Premier League, with the player deserving of praise for his 16 goals in all competitions this season.
