Player released by Nottingham Forest receives pleasant World Cup surprise, drops 7/10 performance

Nottingham Forest have already announced their retained list ahead of the World Cup, as the preparations continue for next season.

Elliot Anderson remains a Forest player despite interest from Manchester City, and he’s one of several Reds players featuring at the tournament.

Dan Ndoye was wasteful as Switzerland got underway against Qatar in California on Saturday night, and just hours later, a player who didn’t make the Forest retained list was in action for his country.

Angus Gunn gets surprise Scotland nod

The Tartan Army are up and running in the United States, but their 1-0 win over Haiti was less than impressive.

Gunn was a surprise pick between the posts with Steve Clarke naming the released Forest goalkeeper instead of Craig Gordon, who enjoyed a brilliant season with Hearts.

The goalkeeper was keen to grasp his opportunity too, producing a pretty steady performance with just a couple of eerie moments to contend with.

He was given a 7/10 by two Scottish media outlets, with The Scotsman saying: “Selected ahead of Gordon. His biggest moment came in the first half when he spilt a Providence shot, only to recover well and smother the rebound.

“Assured handling from a couple of dangerous crosses. Vindicated his selection.”

That rating was backed up by The Herald, who also scored him 7/10, and they said: “More involved than he would have liked, albeit without being overly worked by Haiti. Spilt one cross but was bailed out by Jack Hendry’s clearance.

“Relieved to see Pierrot’s header fly wide as he desperately threw himself across the goal.”

🤔Should Forest have kept Angus Gunn as a third choice goalkeeper?

Forest should have kept Gunn

Although Gunn only played 45 minutes of football during 2025/26, he was absolutely fine as a third-choice option.

Gunn is vastly experienced, and with Stefan Ortega leaving the club, it leaves Matz Sels and the hapless John Victor as the only senior goalkeepers on Trentside.

Gunn would have been a useful player to keep, and now that he’s got minutes at a World Cup, his stock will inevitably rise for clubs wanting to sign him.

It would appear as though Gunn is Clarke’s custodian for this tournament, and it will be fascinating to see how he performs in games against Morocco and Brazil.
