Nottingham Forest are going to try to sign Tottenham wonderkid Lucas Bergvall to replace Elliot Anderson during the summer transfer window.

Anderson looks set for Manchester City this summer, and the 23-year-old will naturally take some replacing in the Forest team.

Bergvall is keen to leave Tottenham in order to chase regular game time and the chance to play regularly and get himself playing in the position he craves.

Anderson has kicked on considerably since leaving Newcastle, and any potential new signing will likely recognise how Forest have experience in helping young players.

Tottenham expert exposes Lucas Bergvall weakness

NFN: What are Bergvall’s main strengths?

JB: Bergvall’s best attribute, without doubt, is his ability to carry the ball forward. The 20-year-old ranks very highly compared to other Premier League midfielders in this department. The youngster has also shown himself to be great in duels, but last season, we didn’t get to see much of that.

NFN: Where are the areas that Bergvall still needs to improve?

JB: Again, this one is clear, and it is very much his ability to move to the ball quicker, which is why Roberto De Zerbi is so open to selling him. He takes far too many touches and then can be rather wasteful with his passing. He has just nine assists in 78 matches for Spurs and his poor passing is why.

NFN: It would appear that Bergvall has had a couple of injuries at Spurs. Has he been unfortunate or is that a cause for concern?

JB: Bergvall is undoubtedly a massive talent, as we saw in his first season at the club. However, two big injuries have hampered his progression, along with Thomas Frank not handling him very well last term. The midfielder was forced to play left wing at times last season, and this has really stunted his growth as a player.

NFN: Why are Spurs seemingly ready to offload Bergvall?

JB: I don’t think Spurs want to lose Bergvall, but ultimately, De Zerbi seems intent on buying ready-made players in midfield and simply, there is no room for him to start. It would likely take big money for Spurs to part ways, as he remains highly rated. It seems to be more about the player actively looking to leave the club.

NFN: Do you see a player capable of enjoying a good career in the Premier League?

JB: Absolutely, but he does need to find his best position quickly. He’s not really nailed down his best role at this stage, although I see him playing as a number eight long-term. He is very highly rated at Spurs, and in Sweden, and in the right environment, I have no doubt we’ll see why.

NFN: Finally, would you back him to be a hit at Forest if he signed?

JB: I think with Elliot Anderson leaving, it opens up space for him to really nail down a starting spot. He’s ready to come in and play regular first-team football in the Premier League, and I think an environment like Forest could be perfect.
