We asked Nottingham Forest fans on TalkingPoints whether they’d take Delap, who only scored three goals for Chelsea last term.
Surprisingly, many are all for the former Ipswich Town frontman, noting that he wasn’t able to play to his strengths in West London.
- “Would take him in a heartbeat – he has it all and is a natural successor to Chris Wood, who he’d learn a lot from. Would be a brilliant signing – get it done.”
- “There’s clearly a player in there, and Forest need someone a bit more youthful in the ‘proper centre forward’ mould. If the price is right, I think it could be a smart play.”
- “I like this. I still think Delap has a bright future in the Prem. You don’t score 14 league goals for Ipswich without having something about you. Delap needs a team suited to his strengths – direct, counter-attacking, aggressive.”
- “STAY AWAY! Delap was absolutely shocking at Chelsea; this would be a total disaster if Forest got him!”
- “I wouldn’t put too much stock into his spell at Chelsea. That club was a dumpster fire last season. Delap can be really good in the right environment, and seems like a proper “underdog’s striker”. I’d back him to find his form if he joins Forest. Would be a bargain for the right price. Maybe 25-30 million.”
- “We’ve just received a rake of money for Anderson. I thought Marinakis was ambitious; why aren’t we looking at Mateta or Thiago from Brentford?”
Chelsea shelled out £30m on Delap’s signature last summer, and it’s thought they’d only sanction his sale if they made a profit on that figure.
It was reported earlier in the window that it’d take bids in the region of £40m to sign him, which put Everton off.
If Forest could agree a total package – comprising favourable add-ons – worth around £35m, that’d be a sensible addition to Glasner’s squad.
Marinakis and his chiefs will have to move at pace, as the season gets underway in 25 days against Leeds United.
