Nottingham Forest were beaten 5-0 by Fulham on Wednesday night but something happened that caught the eye of Roberto Martinez.
The Reds were thrashed in West London to leave Steve Cooper on the brink at the City Ground.
At the end of the game, Cooper appeared to go over to the travelling away fans and apologise. Stuart Pearce couldn’t believe those scenes and called them extraordinary.
Martinez was also in attendance at Craven Cottage. The Portugal manager was overseeing things from close to where Evangelos Marinakis was and something caught his eye…
Martinez discusses Forest situation
It’s a shame that it’s come to all of this. The season didn’t get off to a bad start but now, all of a sudden, Forest are back in a relegation dogfight once more.
Martinez thought something that he saw at Craven Cottage was rather refreshing on Wednesday night and he couldn’t actually believe it was happening.

He told Amazon Prime: “Refreshing. Probably the first moment I was so proud to see the reaction of the fans. I think everyone understood what Steve Cooper has done for the football club. Losing 5-0, the away fans chanting the manager’s name and then a couple of fans at the end were walking across to the owner, asking him to support his manager. I find that refreshing. It shows Forest fans have memories. And in the long term that pays off.”
Marinakis now has huge call over Cooper future
It’s romantic to think that Forest will let Cooper come out of another dreadful run. However, this time even more money has been spent and relegation simply isn’t an option.
Martinez is right about Forest head coach Cooper. As supporters, we absolutely adore him but ultimately one win in 11 Premier League games simply isn’t good enough.
It’s good to see that two fans did go up to Marinakis. However, the fact that he left early and tossed his matchday pass in a bush outside the ground probably tells the whole story.
Saturday could be a swansong for Cooper at Forest. The fan base will truly find out whether or not they’re still playing for their manager or not when Forest play Wolves tomorrow afternoon.
