Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis recently spoke with Oliver Glasner about the head coach position – but he wasn’t convinced by the Europa League winner.

The Reds yesterday decided to part company with Steve Cooper after over two years with the football club. His replacement looks set to be Nuno Espirito Santo who has flown in from Portugal for talks.

The Reds have just one win in 13 matches in the Premier League and ultimately Cooper has fallen on his sword. Glasner has been one of the names mentioned for the Forest job for some time to replace the Welshman.

Marinakis spoke with Glasner over Forest position

According to The Telegraph, Glasner recently spoke with Forest owner Marinakis as the owner tried to get an alternative to Cooper in mind. However, it’s now claimed that he wasn’t convinced by the Austrian.

Glasner has been out of work since leaving Eintracht Frankfurt at the end of last season. He led them to Europa League glory during the 2021/22 campaign, beating Rangers in the final.

The 49-year-old has also managed SV Ried, LASK and Wolfsburg during his managerial career, with the Europa League win being his defining moment thus far.

Forest-linked Glasner might have arrived as an unknown quantity but it would appear that he’s going to be a wanted man. Reports last week claimed that Dortmund are keeping tabs on Glasner should they decide to sack Edin Terzic.

Marinakis right to have reservations on Glasner

Transfermarkt explains that Glasner favours a 3-4-2-1 formation and perhaps that would have been quite interesting given the Forest squad. A three central defenders system was deployed by Cooper in recent weeks as Forest bid for a winning formula.

Winning the Europa League with Eintracht Frankfurt is a pretty amazing feat though. He defied the odds by doing that during the 2021/22 campaign, beating West Ham, Barcelona and Real Betis en route to the final.

Clearly, Forest owner Marinakis had some concerns over appointing him. Glasner is a free agent at the moment and there would have been no compensation to sort out his appointment.

Now, it looks as though Forest have plumped for Espirito Santo to replace Cooper. Only time will tell whether the decision to overlook Glasner has proved a good one for Forest.
