Alan Shearer has told Match of the Day that Nottingham Forest star Chris Wood should have scored more against Newcastle. He’s also claimed that he should have gone mad with one of his Reds teammates at half-time.
Forest claimed a superb victory over Newcastle at St James’ Park, winning 3-1 with Wood scoring a scintillating hat-trick. It took his tally to seven for the season but it could have been more.
Forest fell behind during the clash but roared back to compound the recent misery on Eddie Howe’s team. They now face Manchester United with some confidence under the belts of the players.
Shearer impressed with Wood but criticises teammate
The Match of the Day pundit thought that Wood should have scored even more for Forest during the game with Newcastle. There was a moment in the first half when Anthony Elanga simply had to slip him in for a tap-in but chose to go for goal himself.

Shearer felt that Wood had every right to feel aggrieved and said on Match of the Day: “Chris Wood was just superb, he should have had four because this was on a plate for him. He would have been going mad at half-time because this wasn’t passed to him. If he didn’t, then he should have!”
Elanga was impressive during the game and it’s fair to say that he did redeem himself. The 21-year-old laid on two assists for Wood and perhaps that saved the Sweden starlet from an ear-bashing.
Wood will now be eyeing double figures for Forest
The 32-year-old was signed for £15 million from Newcastle almost a year ago. He was signed at a time when Taiwo Awoniyi was injured and Howe lauded Wood when he left for Forest.
As a result, nobody ever doubted that Wood was a bad character, the consensus, however, was that he didn’t suit the Forest style of play.
Under Nuno Espirito Santo, however, Wood now has a chance to truly prove himself to a head coach. He’s scored four goals in two games and now he will be eyeing more.
Wood has seven strikes to his name during the 2023/24 campaign. He will now want to nudge into double figures and he will feel that target is now more than achievable.
