Nottingham Forest are going to try and sign some new players before the Premier League campaign gets underway in August.

At this time of the year, it’s the nature of the beast that clubs will look to get their squads sorted and Forest are no different.

Yesterday’s friendly game with Chesterfield did highlight that Forest have a wealth of options in their current squad.

With that in mind, there will be emphasis placed on moving players on but some will come into the club too.

Fabrizio Romano claimed earlier today that talks are ongoing between Forest and Fiorentina over centre-back Nikola Milenkovic.

There will also be some movement in terms of trying to tie down some of the current crop to longer contracts at the City Ground.

News of an extension to the contract of one particular player being in the offing has now come to light – and it’s sure to be a popular one.

Nottingham Forest to offer star midfielder a new contract

Now, it’s claimed that Forest want to offer Ryan Yates an extension to his existing deal, according to John Percy of The Telegraph.

Yates has been at Forest for many years and he’s risen from the youth academy to become an integral member of the senior squad.

Last year he was the captain on a number of occasions after Joe Worrall was loaned out to Besiktas in January.

He’s a respected member of the dressing room at Forest and now Nuno Espirito Santo wants to ensure he stays at the club for a long time.

Yates has made 203 appearances for Forest and he is the sort of player who always gives his all for the cause.

The 26-year-old will see his current contract expire next summer and the club are keen to get him tied down to fresh terms.

Jamie Carragher has raved about Yates in the past, calling him a ‘nark’ following a 1-1 draw with Chelsea back in January 2023.

Yates has a part to play next season again

The midfielder might not be considered the first choice in the eyes of some Forest supporters, however, there is a role for him.

Yates always gives his all and although Forest have players who are technically better on the ball, few have his commitment to the cause.

There is definitely a role for the midfielder even if he might have to accept that he’s not always considered a regular starter in the team next season.

Danilo, Nicolas Dominguez, Ibrahim Sangare and Elliot Anderson are all vying for places in the midfield ranks.

Yates does have leadership qualities to bring to the table, however, and he will hope that signing a new contract can win him a place in Espirito Santo’s team.
