Nottingham Forest are now stepping up their attempts to sign a striker before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

The name right at the top of the shortlist looks to be that of Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez.

A Mexican talisman, the 23-year-old scored twice in four minutes yesterday as PEC Zwolle were beaten 5-1 and he’s scored four times already this season.

Gimenez is not actively for sale per se but as he plays in the Eredivisie, Feyenoord are wise to the fact that they might receive offers for his services.

Now, Forest have offered the biggest indication yet that a new striker is on the cards and things are heating up in the final weeks of the transfer window.

Nottingham Forest make opening bid for Santiago Gimenez

At 23, Gimenez fits in with the profile of Forest attracting young and hungry players over ones simply after one final pay day.

Now, according to Telegraaf, the Reds have submitted a first bid of £21 million for the player with a string of add-ons included to make the deal around £25 million.

It’s claimed that the bid is very likely to be rejected, with Feyenoord wanting around £30 million for his signature.

The Reds are in the market for a new striker with Chris Wood and Taiwo Awoniyi the two players who currently rotate the striker spot.

Wood netted his first goal of the new campaign in the curtain-raiser on Saturday and his form under Nuno Espirito Santo has been exceptional.

However, he’s 32 now and ultimately Forest can’t depend on him all season, with Gimenez the younger model being targeted.

It was claimed yesterday that Gimenez has already held talks with Forest head coach Espirito Santo and Miltos Marinakis.

Forest will have to go again for Gimenez

With two weeks left of the transfer window, Feyenoord may choose to play a bit of a waiting game here.

They will want to recoup the very best deal possible for their main striker and who can knock them for that?

If Forest seriously want to sign Gimenez then they have to up the ante and avoid getting embroiled in a battle with other clubs.

The player bagged 26 goals in the Eredivisie last season and although the Premier League would be trickier, Gimenez would be a very shrewd signing.

The plot has started to thicken and it will be fascinating to see what the club’s next offer is for the Mexico international.
