VAR may have missed a potential red card during Nottingham Forest vs West Ham

Nottingham Forest continued to assert their dominance in the Premier League with a 3-0 win over West Ham, but it wasn’t without its controversy.

Nuno Espirito Santo‘s side headed into half-time a man up after Edson Alvarez was given his marching orders for a silly second yellow card offence.

The second half was complete and utter dominance, with Ola Aina and Callum Hudson-Odoi both adding to the tally with goals from outside the box.

However, Chris Wood made the headlines after scoring another goal, which puts him joint-second in the Premier League alongside Bryan Mbuemo.

Jamie O’Hara was speaking on TalkSPORT after the game and stated that Chris Wood is criminally underrated and deserves more praise at Nottingham Forest.

It wasn’t all smiles, though, as there was an incident in the first half that appeared to go a miss in terms of VAR, which would’ve made it worse for West Ham.

VAR miss potential red card during Nottingham Forest vs Fulham

VAR has had its fair share of criticism from Nottingham Forest fans this season, with the incident involving Anthony Elanga at the City Ground against Fulham standing out.

Now, it looks as if VAR may have missed a potential red card to a West Ham player.

Ryan Yates got into a tangle with Crysencio Summerville around the 34th-minute mark, and as Yates was on all fours, the West Ham man appeared to kick out with force downwards onto the head of the midfielder, who stayed down.

Of course, only the player knows what he truly meant to do in that situation, but to the eye it looked like a kick out at Yates, who was getting on Summerville’s nerves.

The thing that makes it slightly suspicious is the fact that he could have just gotten off the Nottingham Forest man and back to his feet easily, but instead almost threw his legs downwards.

VAR and its inconsistencies

Now, we aren’t for one moment saying it’s a stonewall red card and he should have been sent off immediately, but there needs to be some consistency.

In fact, it was very similar to the incident that resulted in a red card for Wolves’ Jean-Ricner Bellegarde last season (as per The Sun), where he kicked out at a Luton defender, only this time it was more of a downwards pressure and to the head, which is arguably more dangerous.

It’s the kind of decision that you see given by some referees and not by others, and to be fair to Yates, he didn’t make a huge meal of it.

Watching the game, it didn’t appear as if VAR made much of a check if any, but we can’t be sure.
