The Nottingham Forest academy is something that fans can often feel extremely united over.

For many years now, the City Ground has produced a number of top talents and earned millions in transfer fees from player sales.

The last of those to depart for huge money was Brennan Johnson who signed for Tottenham for £47.5 million in the summer of 2023.

In the most recent summer window, Joe Worrall joined Burnley and his departure as a homegrown player was a bit of a tough one to take – even if he was down the pecking order.

The academy is once again looking in great shape though and recently Aaron Bott starred as Forest beat Ajax in the Premier League International Cup.

Forest have also progressed in the Notts Senior Cup, with Archie Whitehall producing the goods as Forest beat Rainworth Miners Welfare from Step 9 last month.

Last night, the Reds took part in another new competition with the National League Cup getting underway.

Adam Berry stars as Forest beat Dagenham in National League Cup

The Forest youngster is growing as a player under the influence of B-Team boss Warren Joyce and last night he was in fine form.

Forest went in level at the interval and produced a brilliant second half to claim a big 3-1 victory in the game which took place at the London Borough of Barking Stadium.

Former Forest man Josh Rees had put Dagenham ahead but Berry’s goal on the stroke of half-time restored parity for the young Reds.

The midfielder was at it again in the second half and just nine minutes in he had a second of the night with a well-taken finish.

Forest set the cherry on the cake with 11 minutes remaining when the ever-impressive Jack Nadin scored to ensure a first win in the competition for the Reds.

What is the National League Cup?

This is a new competition set up this season with the participants made up of 16 National League clubs and 16 Premier League 2 under-21 outfits.

Formerly known as the Conference League Cup, the competition many years ago was merely for the non-league sides and was a straight knockout tournament.

Now, upon its revival, the format has changed with the 32 teams making up four groups of eight teams.

Each National League team will play four home games against the under-21 outfits in those divisions with the top two from each group progressing to the quarter-final.

Forest will hope to give a good account of themselves in their maiden foray into the competition and it’s another opportunity for the young players to get some experience of playing against men and professional players.
