£15m Nottingham Forest star now very close to new contract, breakthrough made in talks

Nottingham Forest will look to try and sign a couple of players during the January transfer window but there will be bigger priorities for this month.

Forest have been linked with PSG star Kang-in Lee. The South Korean international is the latest forward to be mentioned over a move to the City Ground and that area of the pitch is something the club are looking at.

Signing a forward is always tough during the mid-season window. Mathys Tel has already rejected Forest and many players choose to stay put during the January transfer window.

Perhaps a bigger cause for concern right now, however, is the number of players who will be out of contract during the summer when the campaign draws to a conclusion.

Ola Aina is in talks over a new Forest contract. Elsewhere, Murillo is also in negotiations – although there is a little bit more time to try and get him tied to a longer contract.

Nottingham Forest reach breakthrough in Chris Wood contract negotiations

The Reds don’t want to become that club that lets their better players leave on free transfers. With that in mind, this feels like really big news regarding the in-form striker Wood.

According to The Mirror, Forest are now very close to tying Wood to a new deal after a breakthrough was made between the parties and the 33-year-old now appears happy with what’s being offered.

Initially, there was an issue over the length of the deal. Forest only offered a one-year extension with Wood and his representatives naturally pushing to secure his future for two years.

Now, it looks as though those issues have been ironed out pretty quickly. All that seems to remain is an official announcement and hopefully, that can come extremely soon.

Wood has proved brilliant signing for Forest

One signing that Steve Cooper did get right was this one. It was Cooper who pushed hard to sign Wood from Newcastle and despite scepticism initially, he’s proved very useful for £15 million.

Eddie Howe didn’t want to lose Wood and now it’s easy to see why. Not only is he a goalscorer but he’s also a solid character in the dressing room and part of the leadership group at Forest.

Wood bagged 14 goals for the Reds last season. If people thought that was merely a purple patch they were wrong, with Wood bagging 12 this season and becoming the club’s all-time leading goalscorer in the Premier League era.

This contract news is solid from a Forest perspective. Although a new striker will still be sought in the summer, keeping Wood means that the transition will be much smoother with him around.
