Nottingham Forest set their condition for Taiwo Awoniyi to leave amid Everton interest

Nottingham Forest will hope to land a new forward before the transfer window closes on Monday night and time is starting to run out.

Evangelos Marinakis is keen to maintain a strong start to the season for Forest. Right now, the club are third in the Premier League and European football is very much a realistic target.

After Saturday’s home game with Brighton, just 15 games will remain. As a result, Forest could do with maybe one or two players just to keep the squad refreshed ahead of the business end of the season.

Matheus Cunha has been linked with Forest. However, his Wolves situation is complex and although he’s stalling on a new deal, the Molineux outfit don’t want to lose him in a relegation battle.

Another Forest target is Yoane Wissa. However, with Brentford dreaming of Europe themselves, they don’t want to lose their 11-goal forward to a rival for one of those positions.

As of yet, the movement has been at a minimum. With that in mind, it feels likely that Forest will ramp things up following the weekend’s game against Brighton at the City Ground.

Nottingham Forest set condition for Taiwo Awoniyi exit

Ultimately, Espirito Santo would be satisfied to lose Awoniyi from his squad on one condition during the transfer window. The condition being that Forest sign a centre-forward, according to the Daily Mail.

Forest have been short of forwards all season. Thankfully, with Chris Wood in fine form, the Reds haven’t noticed the striking department being in short supply as much as they might have done otherwise.

Wood has followed up his 14 goals last season with 14 already this season and the 33-year-old surely looks to be on course for a 20-goal haul during the 2024/25 campaign.

On the other hand, Awoniyi has struggled. He scored his first goal of the season earlier this month when he wrapped up a 3-0 win over Wolves with a goal in stoppage time.

Forest need Awoniyi for now but that could change as the window progresses. He’s barely getting the minutes he craves right now so if another striker comes in he will slide further down the pecking order.

Awoniyi deserves credit when the time comes for Forest exit

Forest wouldn’t be a Premier League club right now were it not for the goals that Awoniyi scored during the 2022/23 campaign when the Reds had won promotion.

He fired 11 times that season and was in red-hot form as the season drew to a close with Awoniyi scoring big goals against Southampton, Arsenal and Chelsea.

Awoniyi’s days as the Forest number nine might well be numbered. However, he should leave with his head held high when that time comes and the fan base would be wise to remember what he achieved at the club.
