The unique role that Ryan Yates will play for Nottingham Forest vs Manchester City

Ryan Yates is unfortunately suspended for Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City, but he will still have a part to play at Wembley.

It’s especially unfortunate that the Nottingham Forest captain will miss the Wembley occasion, as Yates has been in excellent form as of late.

Yates infuriated Tottenham fans on Monday with his battling display in midfield as Forest earned a much-needed confidence boost ahead of the Man City clash, but Yates’ yellow card against Brighton in the quarter-final will keep him off the pitch on Sunday.

Although Yates was hailed for his quarter-final showing, the skipper will be sorely disappointed not to lead his teammates out against City, but according to Nuno Espirito Santo, this doesn’t mean he won’t be an important part of proceedings.

Nuno Espirito Santo discusses Ryan Yates’ FA Cup semi-final role

Graduating from the Forest Academy, everyone involved at the club would’ve loved to see Yates on the Wembley pitch. He still may get the chance if Forest reach the final, but for now, he still has a role to play.

Espirito Santo spoke to the press about the semi-final on Friday and specifically about Yates, alongside Neco Williams, who is also suspended.

The Forest manager said: “They [Yates and Williams] will do whatever they can to help. They are going to be with us, all of the squad is going to travel, it will be a moment for us to be all together.

“Unfortunately, we cannot count on them on the pitch, but they have to give a hand outside the pitch.”

The Forest squad will be backed by over 30,000 fans at Wembley, but the support from their captain will also be cherished. It’s not just his support, though, as Yates is the only surviving member of the Reds side that last graced the Wembley pitch.

Yates is the last of the 2022 Championship playoff-winning side

Evangelos Marinakis has lofty ambitions for Forest’s continued push into becoming European football regulars, but none of that would’ve been possible if the club remained languishing in the Championship.

Thanks to Yates and his teammates, though, the 29th of May 2022 saw the Reds triumph at Wembley to win the Championship play-offs and earn promotion under Steve Cooper.

In typical Yates fashion, he put in a performance full of grit and determination to overcome Huddersfield, winning the most duels in the game with 12 and completing seven recoveries.

He was also important going forward with his passes into the final third, then in seeing out the game by being fouled four times.

It remains to be seen whether someone in the Forest midfield can replicate this Wembley display and ease the concern of missing out on Yates’s ability and experience at the home of football.
