Evangelos Marinakis has enjoyed great success with Nottingham Forest.

The Greek businessman completed a full takeover of Nottingham Forest in 2017 and vowed to return the club to the Premier League.

It took Evangelos Marinakis four years before that vision was realised, with Steve Cooper guiding the club up through the play-offs in 2021.

Since then, Forest have become an established top-flight club and could qualify for the Champions League this season.

That, however, could cause problems with UEFA due to a multi-club ownership rule, so Marinakis has now stepped back from his involvement with Forest.

Evangelos Marinakis suspends involvement in Nottingham Forest

According to The Telegraph‘s John Percy, Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has suspended his involvement with the club.

Because Marinakis owns Olympiacos, who have already qualified for the Champions League, UEFA rules have forced the Greek businessman to step back from his duties with Forest.

UEFA’s multi-club ownership regulations state that teams governed by the same ownership cannot compete in the same competition.

So, with Forest well-placed to qualify for Europe’s top division, Marinakis has halted his control of the club ahead of next season.

The decision had to be made by the end of April, otherwise, the East Midlanders were at risk of breaching the aforementioned rules.

Marinakis remains committed to Forest

The key point to note is that Marinakis remains totally committed to Forest and if indeed Nuno Espirito Santo’s side do qualify for the Champions League, his lack of involvement will only be temporary.

The 57-year-old will appoint Sokratis Kominakis, the co-owner, to the board, so he’ll be taking control for the foreseeable.

Manchester United’s co-owners INEOS were forced to do the same thing as they stepped back from their commitments with Nice.

Manchester City also paused their control of Girona, who shocked La Liga last season by finishing in third, just behind Barcelona.
