Anthony Elanga made the move to Newcastle United this summer, with Nottingham Forest fans keen to see how he got on in his debut for The Magpies.
Forest received £55m for Elanga in what ended up being a deal that was too good to turn down for Evangelos Marinakis, making a significant profit on his original purchase.
This profit looks to have been used effectively as Forest swooped to sign Dan Ndoye for £34m, who has already shown signs that he can replace Elanga’s effectiveness on the right.
Still, Reds fans were keen to see how Elanga got on in his debut for Newcastle, taking to social media to react to what was a frustrating display for the Swede.

Nottingham Forest fans react to Anthony Elanga’s debut
Elanga revealed Elliot Anderson’s impact in his Newcastle move as he looked to step up into Champions League competition, but an away trip to Aston Villa was his first competitive assignment for Eddie Howe.
The game finished 0-0 despite Newcastle playing 25 minutes against 10 men, with Elanga not exactly impressing the onlooking Forest fans.
One fan said: “Elanga still miscontrolling balls and missing 1v1s I see,” with another adding: “Elanga was an important player for us but he’s showing exactly why he was dispensable here.”
Another fan said: “Hearing £55m Elanga missed a sitter? I did try and warn Newcastle fans,” while another continued: “Absolutely lighting pace that cannot be handled, but doesn’t finish like a £55m player for me.”
One more Forest fan said: “Same Elanga, always was his finishing that let him down,” with another adding: “Fact we got £55m for him is hilarious.”
Looking deeper at the stats, Elanga’s display against Villa was one that Forest fans will be very familiar with.
Anthony Elanga’s Newcastle debut was familiar to Nottingham Forest
Elanga earned plenty of praise last season for his displays under Nuno Espírito Santo, but there would be games where the winger would frustrate the City Ground faithful.
His Newcastle debut looked to be one of those games, showing his worth in the creative areas but letting his side down in crucial moments.
| Statistic | Elanga vs Aston Villa |
| Chances created | 2 |
| Ground duels won | 4/6 (67%) |
| Shots on target | 1 |
| Top speed | 32.5 km/h |
Elanga created two chances for his teammates and won a number of duels against Lucas Digne, but in the telling moment, the winger missed a one-on-one chance to give Newcastle the lead in the first half.
There’s nothing to suggest that the former Forest man won’t star for Newcastle this season, but his debut did show some familiar frailties.
