Chris Wood given a comical new nickname after his stunning hat-trick for New Zealand

Nottingham Forest striker Chris Wood is riding the crest of a wave right now and he simply can’t stop scoring goals.

Eyebrows were raised when Forest parted with £15 million to sign Wood on a permanent deal in January 2023 from Newcastle.

Eddie Howe praised Wood upon his departure from the North East but it’s fair to say his first six months at Forest didn’t really go according to plan.

He scored once in a 1-1 draw against Manchester City but then got injured away at Tottenham and didn’t play for the final six weeks of the Premier League campaign.

At the start of the 2023/24 campaign, Wood was second fiddle behind Taiwo Awoniyi but from the moment Nuno Espirito Santo came in, it was all change.

The Forest head coach quickly placed his faith in Wood and he finished last season with a brilliant tally of 14 Premier League goals to his name.

This season he’s picked up where he left off and Shay Given has given Wood a comical new nickname already this season.

Alan Shearer has been impressed with Wood too and he’s managed eight goals during the first 11 games of the campaign.

The 32-year-old striker has been in fine form for his country too and his form for New Zealand over the past fortnight has been very good.

Chris Wood given hilarious new nickname by commentator after New Zealand hat-trick

It was a walk in the park for the All Whites in yesterday’s World Cup qualifier against Samoa – with Forest striker Wood taking his international tally to 41 with a brilliant hat-trick.

The New Zealand-based commentator oversaw the hat-trick goal and brilliantly nicknamed Wood the ‘Sherrif of Nottingham’ after his latest strikes.

Wood is a man playing superbly well at the moment. He’s very much the main man at Forest and ultimately, the club could ill-afford for him to get injured at the moment.

It’s great that he’s gone away and enjoyed a five-goal haul spread across two games, with Forest now keen to get him back on training ahead of the weekend visit to Arsenal.

Forest need to get Chris Wood tied to new contract

Very soon, Wood will turn 33 but whilst he’s in this sort of form, Forest can’t afford to let him depart on a free transfer in the summer.

Wood looks in good shape and whilst he’s scoring goals for fun, there seems little point in not renewing his contract at least by another couple of years.

Forest will need to target another striker in the near future. Wood isn’t getting younger and Awoniyi looks to be lacking match sharpness at the moment.

Still, Wood remains the main man on Trentside and it looks like an immediate priority to get him tied down to a new deal in the very near future.
