Evangelos Marinakis will be rightly praised if Nottingham Forest can pull off a deal for Matheus Cunha, with the price now reportedly set.

Forest are preparing a club-record bid for Cunha in an attempt to secure the Wolves talisman who has notched ten times in the Premier League this season.

Nuno Espirito Santo could clearly benefit from numbers such as this, with only Chris Wood in double-figures for goals this season in Forest’s ongoing push for Champions League football.

Despite Cunha reportedly preferring a move to Arsenal, Marinakis won’t be deterred in his pursuit of the Brazilian who Wolves are desperate to keep to help them steer clear of relegation.

Wolves reportedly valued Cunha at £80m going into the January window but a fresh report on his asking price will be music to the ears of the Forest owner.

Wolves’ asking price for Matheus Cunha has reduced

The price for Cunha was always going to be high given the natural reluctance to sell in the January window, but a new update from Sky Sports has made his move to the City Ground significantly more feasible.

Speaking on the Transfer Show, James Savundra said: “Despite the fact that Wolves are adamant he’s [Cunha] not for sale, we understand that if an offer came in for around £60 million that could bring Wolves to the table.

This fee is significantly lower than the previously suggested £80 million, with £60 million potentially being achievable for Forest given that Marinakis is desperate to sign a striker in January.

The lower number would still be a club-record fee for the club and would create a sizeable gap between the fees for some of the other members of the Forest squad when ranking them alongside each other.

How a deal for Matheus Cunha would rank against Nottingham Forest’s most expensive deals

Forest broke their transfer record as recently as the summer when Elliot Anderson signed for Forest from Newcastle. However, the potential Cunha deal would blow the Anderson signing out of the water in terms of the fee.

Elliot Anderson£35m
Ibrahim Sangare£29.5m
Morgan Gibbs-White£25m
Taiwo Awoniyi£17m

Before Anderson, the deals for Ibrahim Sangare and Morgan Gibbs-White were the Forest owner’s biggest expenditures but those fees could be combined and they still wouldn’t reach the required £60m for Cunha.

Given the fee proposed, the Brazilian would need to hit the ground running at the City Ground so details like Gibbs-White’s friendship with Cunha will greatly ease the worry in that regard.

There’s no getting around that the fee will be anxiety-inducing for the club, but the combination of Cunha’s talent and the abilities of the Forest coaching staff could make the £60m expenditure more than worth it.
