Nottingham Forest are excelling at boardroom level this season but one ex-Forest chief looks set to return to English football to help Everton.
There has been movement in staff under Evangelos Marinakis recently as Sokratis Kominakis was removed as a Forest director.
However, this is not a sign of any issues at the club as Marinakis has the club in a strong position financially, highlighted by Forest posting a net spend of just £16m that shows how frugal and clever the owner has been in the transfer market in recent years.
Some in the football sphere doubted the financial responsibility of the Forest owner after the club spent plenty of money to boost the squad after promotion to the Premier League in 2022.
The Premier League have delayed their new APT regulations which means that the £67m loss that was registered in that first season in the top flight will be scratched off the current PSR measurements, effectively putting to bed any narrative about 2022’s transfer expenditure.
What may keep it alive somewhat, though, is the reappearance of one of Forest’s key decision-makers at the time, who looks likely to emerge in a prominent role at Everton.

Dane Murphy could return to the Premier League after Nottingham Forest exit
There was plenty of confusion as to whether Edu had taken up a role at Forest after he left Arsenal but it was confirmed that Edu is more likely to work for Marinakis’ football empire as a whole rather than a specific position at the City Ground.
Before Edu, though, there was American supremo Dane Murphy, who became Forest CEO after an impressive spell at Barnsley in the Championship.
Murphy oversaw the promotion and then the signings of the likes of Taiwo Awoniyi and Morgan Gibbs-White, before leaving the Reds in January 2023 by mutual consent.
According to a report by The i Paper, Murphy could return to English football in a role with Everton, who have recently been acquired by an American group.
The report said: “Everton are close to appointing a new chief executive, who will join with a remit to lead an on and off-the-field transformation this summer.
“Given the scale of the ambition of the Friedkin Group (TFG) – and the size of the challenges in the summer – it will be “someone well-known” rather than a figure with little to no experience in the Premier League.
“Among the other names linked with the Everton role are former Arsenal CEO Vinai Venkatesham, although that has been played down by some sources, Brighton’s Paul Barber and former Nottingham Forest executive Dane Murphy.”
Murphy was linked with a role at Everton in November when the Friedkin Group were finalising their takeover which, alongside the reported desire for Premier League experience, makes the former Forest man seem a likely option.
Whilst Murphy will be remembered most for the role he played in the signings of on-pitch talent, he also played a key part in the appointment of a fan-favourite manager.
Dane Murphy helped push Nottingham Forest to appoint Steve Cooper
With Nuno Espirito Santo flying, fans still keep a warm place in their hearts for Steve Cooper, who has his own place in Forest history for his role in the promotion to the Premier League.
According to The Athletic, Cooper wasn’t necessarily the favourite for the job until Murphy made his opinions clear on the matter.
The report said: “Murphy was a consistent supporter of Cooper behind the scenes and a champion of his appointment at a time when Forest had also been keen on Chris Wilder, as well as a few alternative foreign targets.
“Murphy specifically requested for a data package to be compiled to support the idea of appointing Cooper, who had twice guided Swansea City into the Championship play-offs. The result was a formula that helped Forest end two decades outside of the top-flight.”
If this is anything to go by, Everton will be in safe hands with Murphy should he be appointed as their new chief executive, with the American’s reputation at the City Ground largely spotless for his efforts in the promotion campaign and consolidating the club in the top division.
