Nottingham Forest have guaranteed themselves a place in Europe next season, and Nigel Clough thinks that should spring the City Ground owners into action.

Forest’s chances of Champions League qualification look slim after dropping points against Leicester City.

The draw, however, was still enough to earn a European spot, with the Tricky Trees guaranteed Conference League football at the very least.

City Ground fans will no doubt be buzzing at the prospect of European football next season, they will, however, also recognise the challenges it also brings – something that has been recently highlighted by Forest legend Nigel Clough.

Nigel Clough claims Nottingham Forest need to bolster squad

Evangelos Marinakis was visibly frustrated against Leicester, even confronting Nuno Espirito Santo at full-time.

Clough has since called on the Forest owner to turn his frustration into action and back his manager this summer.

Speaking on TalkSport (12/05/2025 – 08:55 am), the former forward claimed the Forest squad needs new additions if they are to compete on both fronts next season.

“The squad would have to be bolstered, certainly, because when you are playing Thursday and Saturday, I think when teams do get into Europe for the first season, their league form suffers. So it would need bolstering considerably to compete domestically and in Europe.

“Regarding the last few results, the result at Palace was a good one. Palace are going incredibly well at the moment. They would have expected to beat Leicester yesterday. It is just evening out over the course of 36 games now, they have won 18 out of 36 games – it’s an incredible run.

“Over the course of a season, you have your ups and downs, and you have these long incredible runs like they had during the first half of the season – it’s just evening out a little bit now.”

Forest could be in for busy summer window

When Marinakis decided to suspend his involvement with Forest, it was feared that it might affect the club’s dealings in the summer market.

That, however, doesn’t look like the case, with Forest planning to spend big in the upcoming window after a recent easing of PSR fears.

Forest have already bid for Baris Yilmaz, meanwhile, Yoane Wissa continues to be linked with the Tricky Trees.

With Forest’s Champions League hopes fading away, Marinakis will be able to return to his role at the City Ground, paving the way for some potential big moves in the market.
