After just a year at Nottingham Forest, Carlos Miguel is set to depart the City Ground after being told to leave by Nuno Espírito Santo.

There was always a suggestion that the giant Brazilian goalkeeper could leave the Reds this summer but when Miguel was left out of Forest’s training camp squad, his exit became inevitable.

In fact, Forest told Miguel to find a new club after just three starts in the Garibaldi red, not managing to find a way to displace Matz Sels between the sticks.

Reports had suggested that Miguel was keen to stay in Europe with his next move, but it now appears that a return to Brazil is nearing completion.

Carlos Miguel set for Brazilian return with Palmeiras

Plenty of Forest’s transfer business has involved Brazil this summer, with Igor Jesus and Jair Cunha arriving from Botafogo while Danilo moved the other way.

Ramon Sosa was sold to Palmeiras as well, where he will now be joined by Miguel, as an agreement to end his brief time in English football has been reached.

According to Ge Globo: “Palmeiras is in advanced negotiations to sign Carlos Miguel. The goalkeeper, who excelled at Corinthians, had expressed his intention to find a club where he could play more frequently and has reached an agreement in principle with Verdão.

“The club is expected to pay around €4 million fixed to acquire the 26-year-old goalkeeper, plus bonuses. He will sign a five-year contract with Palmeiras. […] The 2.04m tall goalkeeper is now awaiting clearance to define the details of his trip to Brazil, which should take place next week.”

A deal that should suit all parties, Forest have signed Angus Gunn as Miguel’s replacement already. Even better, Evangelos Marinakis will be feeling positive about the financial side of the deal.

Evangelos Marinakis has done well in Carlos Miguel sale

Espírito Santo was a fan of Miguel but just couldn’t provide him with any game time given Sels’ remarkable season.

His lack of minutes may have seen Forest forced to take a financial hit on the Miguel deal, but the report has detailed that the Reds will break even on the sale.

The £3.5m that Forest are receiving for Miguel is exactly what Marinakis paid for him last season, with the bonuses in the deal potentially taking the fee above the initial signing fee.

He won’t be a player remembered for much of an impact at the City Ground, but at least Marinakis was able to recoup what he spent on the Brazilian.
