Nottingham Forest set for major announcement that will impact marquee Edu signing

Nottingham Forest’s remarkably busy transfer window will earn rightful plaudits, but the volume of incomings is set to cause unwelcome issues.

The Reds spent over £200m on incomings this summer, with Evangelos Marinakis demanding an improvement on last season as a return on his investment.

It’s hard to argue with the Forest owner’s demands, too, as Nuno Espírito Santo now has the capability to name two different starting XI’s for the Premier League and Europe, should he choose to.

However, the sheer volume of players in the squad is set to cause issues with registration for the Europa League in particular, leading to reports of a seemingly key star being left at home.

Nottingham Forest to make shock Europa League squad decision

Amid the new signings, the Reds actually broke their transfer record twice, the first of which was when Dan Ndoye arrived from Bologna for £34m.

That fee was then topped when Forest paid £37m for Omari Hutchinson from Ipswich Town, but remarkably, reports are now suggesting that the club-record signing could be left out of the Europa League squad.

Tom Collomosse has claimed that Hutchinson will be sacrificed to comply with UEFA’s registration rules, with the Reds clearly strong enough in the attacking areas to be able to leave the England U21 international out of the set-up.

This will undoubtedly be a blow for the former Ipswich man who arrived with much promise, but there’s one other person at the City Ground who will be particularly disappointed in the news, given the role he played in signing him.

Edu played a major role in signing Omari Hutchinson

Ndoye has started the season on the right for Forest, a position which was strengthened even further on deadline day when Dilane Bakwa arrived from Strasbourg, with the two clearly ahead of Hutchinson in the pecking order.

According to The Athletic, though, Forest’s New Head of Football may be particularly disappointed by the news, as Edu was crucial to the signing of Hutchinson.

The report said: “Of the 12 new additions to the squad this summer, there were only two that involved more significant influence from Edu: Omari Hutchinson, the club-record £37.5million signing from Ipswich Town, and Douglas Luiz, who arrived on a season’s loan from Juventus, a deal including an obligation to make the move permanent for £25m.

“Both players have ties to Kia Joorabchian, the influential businessman and football advisor, with whom Edu retains a strong relationship.”

Edu’s connections clearly helped Forest, then, but Nuno has made the bold decision not to favour the Brazilian’s signings, leaving Hutchinson in an immediately difficult position at the City Ground.
