Two former Nottingham Forest players will see their respective clubs go head to head in the second round of the FA Cup in December.

Nigel Clough led his Mansfield Town outfit to a heroic win over League One high-flyers Sunderland on Saturday.

Rhys Oates scored early doors to help the Stags knock the Black Cats out of the competition for the second consecutive season.

The Reds icon had felt the heat in the Mansfield hot seat recently. His team had gone 14 matches without a win and some fans had started to turn.

Clough is made of sterner stuff though and now two wins on the spin have the North Nottinghamshire side looking up once more.

Last night saw the draw for the second round take place.

Mansfield were hopeful of a steady tie and one that would give them every chance of progression to round three where the big boys enter the 150-year old competition.

Their reward for defeating one League side in the first round is another away trip, this time to Doncaster Rovers.

The South Yorkshiremen squeezed past Scunthorpe in round one and have struggled this season in the third tier.

There will be a Forest connection in both corners when the teams go head to head at the Keepmoat Stadium.

John Bostock was added to the Forest ranks by Sabri Lamouchi ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.

He only made nine appearances for the Reds but he’s now enjoying his football with Doncaster.

Can Forest icon Clough ensure Mansfield progression in the FA Cup?

Whatever you do, don’t bet against Clough in cup competitions. The Mansfield boss has a superb record when it comes to cups and has some brilliant shocks on his CV.

Heading to Doncaster will be tricky as they are a League One outfit after all. Richie Wellens’ team currently sit second bottom of the division though and there really is nothing to fear.

Bostock will probably be tasked with helping Donny try and topple the Stags. When fit this season he has typically been utilised in the midfield engine room by his boss.

The Stags boss will be buoyed by Saturday’s brilliant victory at the Stadium of Light though. As a result, you wouldn’t bet against Clough and his Mansfield team going into the third round of the FA Cup along with Forest.
