Nottingham Forest could now lose important first-team member in blow to Nuno Espírito Santo

Nottingham Forest might well burst into life in the final weeks of the transfer window with the speculation ramping up regarding the Reds.

Evangelos Marinakis wants to sign a striker this month. The Reds are short in that area of the pitch and although Chris Wood has scored 14 goals, the lack of competition for his place is concerning.

Yoane Wissa has been linked with Forest this week. The Brentford talisman has scored 11 goals this season in the Premier League and is very much considered as one of the best forwards in the division.

Now, Forest are eying a big move for Matheus Cunha too. It’s believed that the Reds want to smash their record transfer fee to bring him to the City Ground before the window slams shut next month.

Any forward arrivals could mean players going in the opposite direction. Taiwo Awoniyi has been linked with West Ham and there has been an update emerging on his future.

The Nigerian player has always given his all for Forest. However, injuries appear to have regressed him as a player and Nuno Espirito Santo is perhaps keen to sign a more reliable option.

Now Soccer Net in Nigeria believe that Awoniyi is open to leaving Forest. It’s claimed that the player is keen to play more games and doesn’t see that forthcoming at the City Ground with wood in fine form.

Awoniyi is only 27 and clearly fancies himself as good enough to play somewhere. When he has got minutes at Forest, he’s looked out of sorts lately and it would appear as though the injuries have taken their toll.

Awoniyi departure makes a lot of sense

Frankly, Forest have outgrown Awoniyi this season. The Nigerian was fine for the Reds when they were in a relegation scrap but with European football now looking likely, better players are required.

If Forest do get a new striker in this month, it would make sense to let Awoniyi leave. If he did become available it seems almost certain that clubs would come forward with offers.

Awoniyi signed for £18 million from Union Berlin and during the 2022/23 campaign, he scored 11 goals to keep the Reds as a Premier League club.

If push does come to shove and Awoniyi leaves Forest, he deserves the utmost respect but based on his latest performances, perhaps the time is now right for him to make a move elsewhere.
