Ola Aina has been incredible for Nottingham Forest this season, making the clamour to keep him at the club even more desperate.

Forest fans were caught off-guard when Aina was linked with a move to Galatasaray in January and whilst nothing came of the rumour, alarm bells were certainly rung about his future.

Aina has been in talks with Forest over a new contract for the majority of the season so far but with each passing week, City Ground fans become more and more nervous about the situation given that the former Chelsea man’s contract expires at the end of the campaign.

The Nigerian walking away for free at the end of the season would be a disaster for Forest, especially when considering that Jamie Carragher named Aina in his team of the season in December which will have only mobilised those taking an interest in his contract talks.

It seemed likely that Aina would be next after Murillo signed a new Forest deal but no update was ever given on the right back until Aina was asked about the situation in a recent interview.

Chris Wood also signed a new Forest contract at the time while Forest fans were waiting to hear about Aina, who was asked about the subject in a recent interview with Sky Sports.

Speaking about whether he sees a future at Forest, Aina said: “I hope so, I really enjoy it here. I enjoy the staff, the players, the club, the community, just everything about it. It’s a good place so hopefully.”

These sentiments will be music to the ears of Forest fans who have been waiting for a positive update on Aina ever since the season started, as the details of his contract running out have been common knowledge.

Long before the January transfer window, AC Milan and Roma were eying up moves for Aina due to his contract situation so Forest fans will be praying that a solution can be found quickly to secure the future of the right back who has become indispensable for Espirito Santo.

Ola Aina has become one of Nuno Espirito Santo’s most important stars

Whilst Neco WIlliams scored for Forest against Brighton and has taken on the role of a more forward-threatening full-back, Aina has become a rock in the defensive side of the game.

Crucial to Espirito Santo’s counterattacking game is the ability to pounce upon opposition mistakes, shown by Aina’s average of 1.25 interceptions per game.

However, the Forest manager’s system has the potential to leave his side open at the back if too many players commit to the counter-attack, which is why Aina’s 5.78 recoveries per 90 are so important to dispel this danger as much as possible.

Even in one-vs-one defending Aina shines as he is only dribbled past 0.82 times per match, whilst his tackling success rate of 76.1% means that he is a formidable opponent for Premier League wingers.

There is no doubt that Aina will continue to garner interest on the transfer market until his contract situation is solved, so the Forest owner must act swiftly to make sure he doesn’t lose one of Espirito Santo’s prized assets for free.
