Carlos Miguel’s future at Nottingham Forest takes a twist as his camp issue an update

Carlos Miguel’s Nottingham Forest career hasn’t quite gone to plan, but his absence from the first-team squad hasn’t entirely been his fault.

When Forest signed Carlos Miguel, he came with a strong reputation, which could’ve seen him challenge Matz Sels for the number-one spot in the Forest squad.

Miguel impressed his Forest teammates in pre-season as the six-foot-eight goalkeeper clearly showed promise, but Sels’ unbelievable season for Nuno Espirito Santo has undoubtedly kept Miguel’s chances at a premium.

This would’ve been understandably frustrating for the Brazilian looking for his break in European football, leading to reports surrounding his Forest future in the upcoming transfer window.

Carlos Miguel could leave Nottingham Forest in the summer

After reports in Brazil had claimed that the keeper had been promised to be the first choice, Nottingham Forest News exclusively revealed that Miguel hadn’t been guaranteed a starting spot.

Regardless, his time at the City Ground hasn’t gone to plan, leading to R7 Esporte journalist Jorge Nicola contacting the player’s camp for his column.

Nicola said: “Carlos Miguel’s first experience after his success at Corinthians could not have been worse: the goalkeeper, who was once considered for the [Brazilian] national team, has not even made his Premier League debut since being signed by Nottingham Forest.”

Specifically on Miguel’s camp, Nicola added: “The blog contacted the goalkeeper’s staff to ask about his future. It is not possible to say for sure that he will continue at Forest, especially since the starting goalkeeper, Belgian Matz Sels, is unquestionable.”

Should Miguel depart the club, it would be a tremendous shame, considering how highly Espirito Santo spoke of him back in November.

Nuno Espirito Santo waxed lyrical about Carlos Miguel

Before Miguel’s rumoured return to Brazil, Espirito Santo was clearly a big fan of the goalkeeper, even suggesting that Miguel could topple Sels for the number one position.

Speaking to ESPN in Brazil, Espirito Santo said: “First of all, [Miguel is] a fantastic person. He’s a big guy, which is important for a goalkeeper. But he’s humble and knows that he has to work hard and that the opportunity will come one day.

Unfortunately, we were eliminated on penalties in a game in which he played very well, one of the best on the field. But opportunities are coming, and the important thing is that he keeps doing what he does, which is supporting Matz Sels because a goalkeeper’s life is a mini-group within a group, and they have to be very united, and Carlos is doing that and we are very grateful.”

He could’ve been a big hit at Forest, but Sels’ rise to stardom has left Miguel without a chance at truly impressing the Forest coaching staff consistently, meaning an exit is probably for the best.
