The Tricky Trees are still without a win under Ange Postecoglou, and the Australian is currently experiencing an alarming run of form.
Saturday’s game was not a vintage Postecoglou performance by any means, with Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs admitting to feeling safe throughout the 90 minutes.
The first-half goal from Omar Alderete was all that could separate the two sides, and Neco Williams has revealed his shock at the moment that led to the goal.

Neco Williams speaks on controversial free kick decision
Neco Williams has said he saw something for the very first time in his football career as Nottingham Forest fell to defeat against Sunderland.
In the first half, Nicolas Dominguez was controversially yellow-carded for simulation, and a free kick was given to Sunderland.
The Black Cats would then score from the resulting free kick, and controversy ensued throughout and after the game.
Andy Reid was left baffled by the decision and Neco Williams has also spoken about the referee’s call via Sky Sports.
Williams said, “We should have defended it better but at the same time, I’ve never seen a ref give one of those free kicks before in all my time of playing football.
“There was contact so he got it wrong and for the goal, I was held back. He had two arms around my waist and that played a key factor in their goal. It is two poor decisions, especially by the referee, and then the people on VAR.”
Ange Postecoglou doesn’t blame decision for loss
While Ange Postecoglou does not believe it was a free-kick, he has admitted they should have defended it better.

Speaking with Sky Sports following the game, Ange said, “It wasn’t a free-kick but there’s nothing we can do about that, and we should have dealt with the free-kick better.”
In truth, Nottingham Forest did have the chances to get a result out of the game, with Chris Wood missing a couple of chances you’d expect him to usually score.
Omari Hutchinson’s introduction added a much-needed spark to their forward play, and the winger is undoubtedly pushing to start against Newcastle next Sunday.
Up next is a home tie against FC Midtjylland in the Europa League on Thursday, and it is a perfect chance for Ange to get his first win.
