Nottingham Forest’s striker pursuit has seemingly come down to a choice between Matheus Cunha and Yoane Wissa, with new information on the latter potentially making him the favourite.
Despite Nottingham Forest making Cunha their top target ahead of transfer deadline day, Wissa remains an interesting prospect for the club given his similar goalscoring capabilities when compared to Chris Wood.
His 11 Premier League goals saw Forest register interest in Wissa before the news emerged that Cunha had been linked with Forest and overshadowed the excitement surrounding the Congolese forward.
Forest were willing to bid a club-record fee for Cunha to help secure his arrival at the City Ground, but the deal became difficult given Cunha prefers a move to Arsenal.
If the Cunha deal continues to evade Evangelos Marinakis, a return for Wissa would most likely be the next step to secure a striker. This step is made even more interesting given a recent report on Brentford’s valuation of Wissa.

Brentford slap tempting price tag on Yoane Wissa
Tottenham have registered interest in Wissa whilst Forest turned their focus on Cunha. However, in a recent update by The Standard, information on Brentford’s valuation for Wissa could tempt Forest right back into the race.
The report said: “Brentford would want around £40 million to sell Yoane Wissa before Monday’s transfer deadline, as they look to keep their prolific front-line intact.
“The 28-year-old has also been linked with Tottenham, though Standard Sport understands that any move from the north London club is extremely unlikely at this stage.”
Forest had a £22m bid rejected for Wissa earlier in January before the Cunha interest came to the forefront, meaning that Marinakis will have to nearly double his bid to secure the Brentford man.
This may seem like an impossible task but Forest were willing to break their transfer record for Cunha, which would’ve taken the fee for the Brazilian beyond the £40m valuation for Wissa.
Regardless of the intentions of Forest in terms of Cunha, the Wissa valuation will be extremely tempting given how it compares to Wolves’ valuation for their Brazilian talisman.
Matheus Cunha would cost Nottingham Forest significantly more than Yoane Wissa
Being understandably reluctant to sell their star man, Wolves slapped a £70m price tag on Cunha to deter interest from both Forest and Arsenal.
At £30m more than Wissa, the Forest owner would want to see a significant increase in productivity from Cunha in comparison to Wissa, something that their season stats don’t suggest would be apparent.
| Statistic | Matheus Cunha | Yoane Wissa |
| Goals | 10 | 11 |
| Expected goals per 90 | 0.24 | 0.59 |
| Shots on target per 90 | 1.31 | 1.42 |
| Touches in opposition box per 90 | 4.69 | 4.79 |
| Pass accuracy % | 78.4 | 80.1 |
Statistically, Wissa scores more goals, achieves a better xG and marginally edges ahead of Cunha in shots on target and touches in the opposition box per 90 in the Premier League season.
Cunha has the advantage of being a more technically gifted player and is also three years younger than Wissa, but the £30m extra investment for the Brazilian seems illogical for Marinakis.
Marinakis is determined to sign a striker in January, with the financial and statistical advantage seeming to lean towards Wissa despite the ongoing preference for Cunha.
